Faculty of Communications, Language and Literacy

Our faculty provides the opportunity for students to express themselves creatively in the modern world.

The Faculty of Communications consists of English language and literature, French, drama and media studies. There are nine subject specialists within the faculty: Miss J Goldsmith (English and media studies), Mrs G McGuinness (English), Mrs S Whiteley (English),  Mr K Moon (English and media studies), Mrs C Higginbottom (English and drama), Miss E Dixon (English and drama), Mrs L Gunn (English), Mrs R Johnson (French), Mrs S Forshaw (French).

Students will learn to communicate through the use of the English language with a focus on accuracy and understanding the many ways in which meaning is created and conveyed. Literature provides exploration, cultural, social and historical awareness, adventure and excitement.

In French, students from year 3 to year 8 develop language learning skills before learning how to manipulate grammar and vocabulary at GCSE level.

Drama allows students to explore a range of challenging topics in a safe environment. Students across all phases have the opportunity to participate in performances; GCSE students may also choose to direct, design costumes or take charge of sound and lighting.

Media studies is a thoroughly modern subject covering a range of platforms with which students are well acquainted, making them motivated to study.

Across all subjects, skills for life are taught in a challenging, creative and supportive environment.

Faculty of Humanities and PSHE

The Humanities College is a vibrant and exciting area of the school. We are committed to delivering high quality, challenging, interesting and appropriate learning experiences to all our students, inside and outside of the classroom.

The Humanities College consists of geography, history, religious education and PSED housed in a suite of three dedicated classrooms.  The college is staffed by three specialists; Mrs C Stobbs (history and PSED), Mrs L McGuinness (geography) and Miss S Borwick (religious studies). We also have the support of staff from other areas of the academy who contribute to the delivery of our subjects. All students study all subjects in Phases 1 – 3 with history, geography and religious studies available as GCSE options at Phase 4.

We are a forward thinking college which makes full use of the resources available to us. All our rooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards and Apple TV. All staff have IPads and access to class sets of laptops and IPads for use in lessons. We employ these as part of a wide range of teaching and learning styles which are developed and shared across the college.  Home learning is innovative in Humanities including traditional homework and student choice grids. This helps to develop personaedlised learning and to encourage students to take responsibility for their progress. Student success is celebrated through the use of our blog, twitter accounts and displays in the Academy.

Across the Phases students study a rich and varied curriculum that is supported by extra-curricular activities including museum trips, visiting speakers and field trips. Pupils studying Humanities not only learn the subject but also gain invaluable transferable skills such as research, assimilation, comprehension and analysis of material; the formulation of reasoned interpretation, and the development of an ability to communicate clear and coherent judgments.
