Students in all Phases at Unity are given the opportunity to develop their knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the Art world. They are encouraged to develop the following skills:

  • Creativity - how they use and experiment with a range of materials to produce images.
  • Competence - how they develop their technical knowledge and processes to complete and improve their work.
  • Cultural Understanding - how they discuss and appreciate the work of artists from various times and cultures and use their understanding to develop their work further.
  • Critical Understanding - how they have used the techniques and ideas of various artists and adapted them to enhance their own work.

What will I do?

Over the course our students cover a variety of methods and techniques whilst completing work for 3 main projects:

  • Object observation
  • Self portraiture
  • Landscape

They will be encouraged to:

Develop images both from real life and your imagination.

Look at and discuss artwork by other artists

Use various materials and techniques to produce your images – paint, pencil, printing, collage and modroc sculpture.

Produce final images that are both personal and show an influence from the work of other artists and craftspeople.

Keep a personal sketchbook for the development of ideas.

How will I be assessed?

All work produced over the course will be entered for the final grade. This will account for 60% of the final grade.

They will also be required to complete a separate piece of work in a final exam. This will account for 40% of the final grade.

What next?

Students can go on to study Art and Design for AS and A2 level and BTEC when they leave school. They can also go on to university and continue studies there.
