In these subjects students study a range of texts from the classic literature of Shakespeare and a wide range of poets through modern authors like Anne Fine and Michael Morpurgo to letters, articles and blogs. Texts are accessed, for example, by role-play, empathy tasks, historical context, reaching students through a variety of engaging tasks. High quality resources have been developed by the faculty to enhance the learning experience.
Spelling, punctuation and grammar are key skills, practised through extended writing in a range of forms so that students can express themselves coherently and eloquently, enabling students to recognise and develop their writing strengths. Increasingly, modern technology is used in English lessons in order to make what students learn more relevant in the world of work.
Examples of lunchtime and after-school activities are drama club, film club, SPAG bootcamp and booster classes for GCSE students.
Homework is set regularly for all year groups with homework projects for years 7, 8 and 9 which help develop the reading and writing skills they will need at GCSE.
